Points test (subclass 189, 190, 489)

By migrating to Australia as skillful professionals (not labourers), I found that these subclass 489, 190 and "first class" 189, the most common under General Skill Migration (GSM) scheme of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) because you don't need sponsorship from qualified Australian employers, which in my opinion can usually be very hard to obtain if you're offshore.

Generally, you might be eligible to apply for a visa if you satisfy those requirements as follows:

  • your nominated occupation is on the SOL  ,which is the skills Australia needs (most important because if your profession is not what Australia demands, then you have to wait for the next Australia's Migration Programme, which renews anually on 1 July).
  • no older than 50 years of age
  • at least competent English (i.e. IELTS each band at least 6.0)
  • have a suitable skills assessment (you send your qualification and academic transcripts to the right assessing authority, and pay for a fee (approx. $A160 i.e. Engineers Australia).
  • might have overseas or Australian working experience in your nominated occupation if you claim points for job experience, which is also being assessed by the same assessing authority mentioned above.
  • might have overseas or Australian qualifications ( Diploma, Bachelor, Master or Doctorate degree) if claiming points for qualifications, which is also being assessed by the same assessing authority mentioned above.
  • *** NEW*** Australia's Migration Programme 2016-17 - Specialist Education Qualification: an additional 5 pts for Doctorate or Master by research-level qualifications gained by Australian universities in nominated field of education.
  • Other factors such as:
    • having a credentialled community language
    • studying in regional Australia
    • having partner skills (under 50 years old, competent English, same nominated occupation as yours and positive skills assessment)
    • having a Professional year in Australia
